$13 Million – Shaw Air Force Base, SC
Services: Fire Protection Engineering
The USAFCENT Headquarters at Shaw AFB
is the Central Command Headquarters for the Air Force operations in the middle
east. The design-build Scope consisted of building a 2 story
50,000 sq. ft.
office addition on an existing 3 story 89,000 sq.
ft office building. GSE’s scope
consisted of providing complete fire protection and life safety design
throughout the existing building and its addition. The project included newly
created and/or existing Sensitive Compartment Information Facilities (SCIF’s)
which included offices, servers, communications centers and video
teleconferencing facilities.
Site engineering provided by GSE
included the incoming water supply for both portions of the project and
provisions for fire department access in accordance with DoD Anti-Terrorist
standards. GSE provided engineering design and inspection services for
all life safety systems throughout the project as well as passive fire protection
features. In addition, a new
Mass Notification system was designed to provided
supervision and notification throughout both buildings. Our Scope
included the design of fire sprinkler and standpipe systems. Seismic
protection design for all systems was included.
commissioning systems was also
included.
Retrofitting fire protection in the
existing building required working with Air Force Command personnel who needed
to remain in place to provide vital support for the Air Force efforts in the
middle east. Many unknowns in concealed spaces above ceilings were
present in the existing building due to security issues in this project.
To accommodate this GSE provided on-site daily consulting to expedite
engineering oversight of changes necessitated by these unknown variables.
The work required a 100% escort requirement by the government.
Moody Air Force Base, GA
Services: Fire Protection
GSE provided design and shop drawings for a new hangar and weapons release building. The hangar utilized wet pipe sprinklers with high expansion foam and a fire pump. The weapons release building incorporated some high hazard areas due to ammunition and explosives ordinance storage.
$32 Million – Tuskegee, AL
Services: Leed Consulting
Moton Field was the only primary flight training facility for African-American pilot candidates in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. The National Park Service plans to commemorate the contribution of the Tuskegee Airmen to the war effort and to the subsequent Civil Rights movement through the creation and development of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Site. GSE was responsible for the LEED consulting for this project. The project consisted of the rehabilitation of Moton Field in Tuskegee, AL, and included the Tuskegee Airmen Museum, National Historic Site, and Visitor's Center. All buildings on the site were re-constructed, where possible. A Visitor's Center was added on the site, as well. All existing and new buildings were required to comply with the LEED Certified level as defined by the USGBC. GSE coordinated with the architect, landscape architect, and all engineering disciplines to ensure that LEED requirements were met in the contract documents. The design team was awarded the 2006 John Wesley Powell Prize for Historic Preservation for its work on this project.
